Review of our Stay at The Renaissance Midtown New York City

A quick hotels near me search after exiting New York City's Penn Station gave us access to a variety of available hotel inventory within a few city blocks. We chose to make our reservation at the Renaissance Midtown due to it's distance from Penn station, amenities offered, and pricing in comparison to the other hotels in the surrounding area.

Located in New York City's garment district the fashionable Renaissance Midtown Hotel offers a nice blend of functional and stylish design. The luxury boutique style hotel opened in 2016, and is perfect for last minute overnight stays due to it's convenient location to Penn Station. The 29 floor hotel offers 340 guest room, 8 suites, meeting space, a club lounge, valet parking, and an on-site restaurant known as Rock & Reilly's. The lobby which is located on the 6th floor of the hotel offers ample seating, a small lounge bar, free WIFI and an outdoor patio. The lobby would benefit from small self service gift shop, or simply a guest accessible cooler with drinks. Trying to buy a bottle of water, or "box of water" required waiting in the front desk line on multiple occasions. The smart system elevator bank is quickly learned and functional but does not seem to offer a faster system for navigating the hotel floors. Many times we found ourselves waiting from the elevators for two to five minutes.

The Guest Room

The standard guest room is average in allotted square footage and is very comparable to most standard NYC hotel rooms. The design of the room is a blend of contemporary and industrial with natural hardwoods, limited use of carpet, floral wallpaper, fashion themed art, and a cement ceiling. An often overlooked feature in many hotels, the guest room provided two sets of shades, partial blackout and full blackout. The lighted closet is functional, and offers two robes, laptop safe, two full length mirrors, single shot coffee maker, and an energy saving smart refrigerator. The energy saving smart refrigerator comes with a snooze setting for the energy conscious and a quick cool setting for those in need of a cold drink fast. Due to the small footprint, furniture in room has been kept limited. The The standard king room will offer travelers a soft chaise lounger with two pillows. The standard double room will offer a an oversized lounge chair, small table, and a reading light. Both the standard king room and stand double room offer a small desk with self closing drawers and rolling chair. Room service is available in the guest room, as well as a master switch which controls all the power in the room. The functionally of the guest room may benefit from moving the lounge chair. It's current location in the corner of the guest room severely limits accessibility to the shades mechanical bead chains. Making the process of opening and closing guest rooms shades a much more challenging process than it needs to be.

Guest Room Technology
Guest room technology features a smartphone guest room key option, digital thermostat, Smart TV, usb charger desk outlet, and a JBL Horizon bedside clock with two USB ports for bedside device charging. The space saving smart tv located on the wall opposite the bed offers folio review, device pairing, netflix, and a standard channel lineup including HBO.
In addition the guest rooms offers an ample amount of outelts located next to the bed, and fast free WIFI.

The Bathroom
The bathroom is spacious and functional which is helped by a space saving frosted glass sliding entrance door. Included with the bathroom are standard amenities including a nice supply of towels, mint infused shampoo, conditioner, body wash, moisturizer, and a Conair multi-light make up mirror. All of the toiletries are produced by Aveda, a Renaissance brand standard. One of the nicest features of the bathroom is the spacious frosted glass enclosed shower, which offers a choice of a raindrop shower head, or a shower wand accessory. The raindrop shower head and wand shower attachment will not work at the same time. The bathroom could benefit from a larger bathroom garbage can, as well as removing the water glasses from the bathroom. Attempting to throw anything out in the laughably small bathroom garbage can, was almost next to impossible without having to touch the top lid. Using a water glass that has been sitting in a hotel bathroom, no further explanation needed.

The Gym
The Renaissance Midtown does not offer their own internal gym. Instead they have partnered with a Planet Fitness located on the 2nd floor. Hotel guests have free access to the Planet Fitness, after a short registration at the gym desk. The Planet fitness offers a 30 minute cardio and strength training circuit, as well as an large supply of treadmills, elliptical machines, and stationary bikes. The positive aspect of partnering with Planet Fitness, is that hotel guests will have access to state of the art training equipment that typically they will not find in a standard hotel gym. The negative aspect is the Planet Fitness locker room which is limited compared to a standard hotel locker room. Don't expect to find fresh fruit, clean towels, earbuds, sauna, or reading material in the Planet Fitness locker room. There is no pool at this hotel.

The Restaurant
Located on the 5th floor of the hotel Rock & Reilly's is a corporate designed Irish Pub with an excellent layout, plenty of natural light, and good energy in the afternoon and evenings. The outdoor patio overlooks the busy NYC city streets below, and offers unique views of the Empire State Building, Penn Station, and Madison Square Garden. The restaurant could benefit from a grab and go morning menu. Options are limited for travelers looking for something quick and healthy. Fortunately the surrounding area neighborhood offers many alternative options for breakfast including a Starbucks located steps away. For those looking for a more authentic Irish pub experience check out the Pig 'N" Whistle on 36th street which opened in 1969.

The Neighborhood
The busy neighborhood, like most of NYC, has a lot to offer including shopping, coffee shops, beer garden, and easy access to Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. This is an ideal neighborhood for travelers who need easy access to transportation in and out of New York City.
